In 2000, lac Saint-Pierre became part of UNESCO as a biosphere reserve. It's not surprising when we know that 90% of the territory is still in a wild state and is used as a migratory stop for many birds. In fact, 288 species were observed. Some are residents, others are passing by. The industrial park, not far away, helped keep the place pollution free in adopting ecological methods that are not dangerous for the environment. Roughly, lac Saint-Pierre is the last fresh water basin of the St. Lawrence River. Its 103 islands make it the most important archipelago of the St. Lawrence. It's also where we find the main concentration of herons in North America with its 1,300 nests listed. Finally, 27 species of rare plants have been studied.
